Updating Flash for Internet Explorer in Windows 8.x

NOTE: This article contains instructions for updating Adobe Flash for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.  If you are not using Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, please refer to this tutorial for removing older versions of Adobe Flash Player.

Among the various advancements made by Microsoft with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, the Adobe Flash Player software is now built into Windows for Internet Explorer and cannot be removed.  As a result, we require that the version of Adobe Flash that is built in to your Windows 8 computer to be kept up to date so that you are less vulnerable to potential security exploits in older versions of Adobe Flash Player. This page will walk you through the steps to upgrade Adobe Flash Player by running Windows Update.

Step 1

Hit the Windows key + R on your keyboard.

In the windows that pops up, type “Control Panel” and hit Enter on your keyboard.

The Control Panel window should pop up. In Control Panel, click the text next to View by and select Small icons.

Step 4

Click Windows Update.

On the left side of the window, click Check for updates.

Step 6

Windows will check for updates to your system.  If any updates are found, click Install updates. NOTE: If you get a message that says No updates are available, then your computer may need to restart before the update goes into effect.

Step 7

Restart your computer in order to apply the update.

After performing the update and restarting your computer, you should be fully up to date and able to access the internet.  If for some reason you still do not have internet access after running Windows Update and restarting your computer, we would recommend visiting a help desk so that we can take a more in-depth look at your computer to get the issue resolved and get you back online.
