How to manually Update MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

If you are unable to update the definitions on MBAM, you might have to do a manual update. To do this, follow these steps:

For Windows 7/8 (If you’re using XP please see step 6)

Step 1

Obtain a computer (do not use the quarantined device) that does have access to the Internet. Run and update MBAM on the device and obtain a USB drive.

Step 2

Press Windows Key+R to open the run window (the Windows Key has the Windows logo on it and is usually to the left and right of the space bar, you must hold both keys at once.)

mbam update 1

Type %ProgramData% into the run window and then press Enter

Step 3

Select the “Malwarebytes” folder

Then select the “Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware” folder, once inside this folder copy the “rules.ref” and “Configuration” files and move them to your USB drive.

Step 4

Start the computer that you wish to perform the manual update on

Press Windows Key+R to open the run window (the Windows Key has the Windows logo on it and is usually to the left and right of the space bar, you must hold both keys at once.)

mbam update 3

Type %ProgramData% into the run window and then press Enter

Step 5

Navigate to the “Malwarebytes” folder and then the “Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware” folder (as described in step 3) on the computer to be updated. Then move the “rules.ref” and “Configuration” files (copied from the first computer) from your USB to the “Malwarebytes Anti-Malware” folder. When asked if you’d like to replace the current file, select “Move and replace” for all instances.

Step 6

For residents who are using XP, the process is the same, save for the fact that instead of %programdata% the “rules.ref” and configuration files will be located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware\

Rather than use the run command, simply copy and paste the above address into the Windows Explorer (the dialog box that pop up whenever you’re browsing documents) address bar and press enter.
