Tutorial: Connecting to DHNet Wired service

Using Internet Connection Sharing for TiVOs and Video Game Systems
Ubuntu Linux

Please note that for Internet Connection Sharing, you will need the following:

  • The TiVO or Game Console must have an Ethernet port
  • Your computer must have two Ethernet ports. Additional Ethernet ports can be added to your computer through USB, PCMCIA and ExpressCard. The ethernet port for connecting your peripheral device should be a Gigabit 10/100/1000 adapter, as we have noticed 10/100 adapters may encounter errors and not function properly with the peripheral.
  • For Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and the Nintendo Wii: A cable long enough to reach from your computer or Game Console.
  • For most other devices: An Ethernet crossover cable long enough to reach from your computer to the TiVo or Game Console. There are two types of Ethernet cables, straight through and cross-over. The cable used from your computer to the Ethernet jack on the wall is a straight through. You will need to purchase an Ethernet cross-over cable from a computer store depending on the system you are using.
  • Remember this is a temporary solution until those systems support 802.1x authentication

If your computer doesn’t have a second Ethernet port you will need to install one or have a computer service store install one for you.
